I’ve been so busy these past couple of weeks traveling and working that I haven’t had time to sew anything. Instead, I’ve been salivating over what I want to sew this fall. In this post, I share with you what I consider to be the top 5 fall trends to sew. I’d love to hear what’s on your list! To see what I have planned, read on.
Trend Number One: Jeans
I am committed to making myself a pair of jeans this fall (and soon!). I’m going to use Mimi G’s Simplicity 8222, a perfect pair of skinny jeans. In fact, she has a sew-a-long going on right now so you should join me! I’ve purchased my fabric but I’m still three weeks behind, sadly. If skinny jeans aren’t your style, Closet Case Files has an attractive boyfriend jeans pattern.
Trend Number Two: Lingerie
Bra-making is very popular right now and I’m anxious to jump on the bandwagon. Madalynne just came out with a beautiful pattern collaboration with Simplicity. In this photo you can see Simplicity 8229. She also has a bralette version that I accidentally overlooked but will be picking up during Joann’s Simplicity pattern sale this weekend. When I was in Kansas City last week I bought a $100 matching bralette and panty from Birdies, a really charming lingerie boutique. I’ve never bought expensive underwear before. The owner helped me realize I’ve been wearing the wrong bra size my entire life. I think that’s why I felt so motivated to buy a correct fitting bra right then and there. But I cannot afford to do that again. Like, ever. If I can competently make my own beautiful lingerie, I’ll be psyched!
Trend Number Three: The Coat
There are so many gorgeous coat patterns out right now. On the runways, I’m loving the modern take on a classic military coat, and the more casual poncho inspired wrap. Erica Bunker makes one coat a year, at least. Her coats are swoon-worthy. I think one coat a year is a good goal. I’m trying to decide between Simplicity 8217, Butterick 6384, or Simplicity 0287. Will you be making a coat this year?
Trend Number Four: Open Back in a Cold Weather Dress
I love the idea of a long sleeved dress with an open back. During the Monthly Stitch Indie Pattern Month, I won a couple of cool patterns from Oki-Style patterns, a German pattern maker. One such pattern is the Jazz Dress:
This pattern is everything. I cannot wait to make it in a luxurious fall fabric. And finally . . .
Trend Number Five: A Classic Silhouette
I don’t know if this is on trend, per se, but for me, a classic silhouette, especially one reminiscent of a ballerina, never goes out of style. Audrey Hepburn is my style icon and I love the look of this full pleated skirt and snug ballerina top. McCalls 6706 is a pattern I LOVE, and would definitely work to recreate this skirt. For the top, I’m looking for any pattern designed for a knit with interesting detail, such as McCalls 7127.
We’ll see what I manage to accomplish between now and December . . . I’d love to hear if you agree with this list or if there are other trends you’d add. Leave a comment below
