For Valentine’s Day, my boyfriend gave me an artists’ set and sketchbook. He gave me this thoughtful gift so that I can practice sketching out my own design ideas.
I’ve never been very good at drawing, however, so I went out to Barnes & Noble to pick up some instructional books on fashion drawing and design. These are some really great books that I’d recommend to anyone who wants to learn fashion drawing.
First, I purchased Creative Fashion Drawing. This book lays out the basics of drawing various poses for both men and women.
I also like that this book teaches you how to draw flats and technical drawings like you see on the backs of pattern envelopes:
Lastly, the book features a gallery of exemplary fashion illustrations:
The book I’m currently working my way through is Fashion Design Studio. It has a lot of great tutorials for absolute beginners and makes drawing easy and approachable.
I also bought Fashion Illustration Art.
I think this is one I’m going to turn to once I’ve developed some basic drawing skills and gain some confidence. It has a lot of great tutorials on fashion illustration with paints and watercolors. The illustrations in this book are really beautiful. Check it out:
I’ve been practicing drawing every night. My sketches aren’t great, but they’re improving. I’ve been enjoying working on a new skill.
I’m looking forward to sketching out my own design ideas, especially since I have a couple of books on pattern making that I’ve been meaning to try out. I think it will be nice to get back into watercolor painting, too.
What about you? Do you draw? Do you have any tried and true books you love for drawing? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
